Res Judicatae

The first issue of Res Judicatae: The Magazine of the Law Students' Society of Victoria was published in 1935. Although initially called a magazine, it was actually a scholarly journal, the first of its kind published at an Australian law school. Members of the LSS (who included recent graduates as well as current students) handled editing and management. The journal published learned articles by staff and current and former students.

The dean, Kenneth Bailey, said in 1939:

The journal is entirely scientific in character and has won for itself an honourable place in the periodical literature of the law in Australia. Recent articles have been cited lately in the Commonwealth Law Reports and in the Parliament of Victoria.

In 1957, Res Judicatae was renamed the Melbourne University Law Review.
