Initially established as a quarterly magazine, The Summons was first published in 1891 by the forerunner of the Law Students’ Society, the Articled Law Clerks’ Society. It contained news and articles on legal topics. The Summons had a twelve-year run, but then disappeared until its revival in 1963 on the 75th anniversary of the society.
The later incarnation of The Summons was ideologically somewhere between the two other contemporary student publications, the newssheet De Minimis and the academic journal, the Melbourne University Law Review. It covered the news and events happening in and around the Law School, but also reported on topical social and legal issues of the day.
